Toney Stroud has focused his entire legal career in the area of labor and employment law. Mr. Stroud represents a wide range of employers in all aspects of occupational injury claims, occupational disease claims, and occupational pneumoconiosis claims. He also has considerable appellate practice before both the Workers’ Compensation Board of Review and the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Mr. Stroud has administrative experience and has represented employers before the prior Workers’ Compensation Commission, Office of Judges, and Circuit Court on administrative matters. He has also participated in several mediations as part of the West Virginia Supreme Court’s Mandatory Mediation Program.

Mr. Stroud represents both self-insured and insured employers. He has handled claims of both injuries and diseases for employers in several different industries. Those claims include traumatic injuries, repetitive trauma such as carpal tunnel syndrome, chemical exposure, hearing loss, black lung, and occupational stress claims.

Mr. Stroud serves as Managing Member of the Columbus office and leader of the Workers’ Compensation Group.

Prior to beginning his legal career with Steptoe & Johnson, Mr. Stroud served as a claims administrator with a third party administrator. Within this capacity, he managed workers’ compensation claims from their inception and continued monitoring the claims throughout the litigation process. In addition, Mr. Stroud assisted employers in premium-related issues as well as feasibility studies for those employers considering self-insurance. Through this experience, he also gained extensive knowledge in assisting employers with issues that arise in a monopolistic workers’ compensation system.
