Laurie Barbe concentrates her practice on representing insurance companies in response to first and third party insurance claims and the defense of personal injury, wrongful death, product liability, and property damage claims. She has also been involved in appellate proceedings before the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Ms. Barbe presently serves as Group Leader for Steptoe & Johnson’s Insurance, First Party and Coverage Practice Group (IFPAC), and is editor of the Steptoe & Johnson Insurance Law Update newsletter.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

  • Provided claim handling and legal updates presentations
  • Provided assistance to insurance companies writing new business to assure their policies are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Defense of WV coverage litigation for excess and surplus lines insurers
  • Handled defense investigation and defended insurers in suspected arson and fraud claims
  • Provided training to insurance companies about claim handling and avoiding claims of “bad faith”
