For over twenty-seven years, Susan Brewer has focused her practice in the area of litigation, specializing in professional liability and personal injury defense.  She has tried over one hundred jury and non-jury cases in state and federal courts and has been involved in appellate proceedings before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals.  She is a longtime member of the firm’s Executive Committee and has served as Managing Member of the Morgantown office since its opening in 1988.

Medical Professional Liability
Mrs. Brewer regularly defends physicians, hospitals, nurses, physician's assistants, nurse midwives, and other health care providers in medical negligence actions across West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. She has:

Mrs. Brewer has defended attorneys in West Virginia in legal malpractice actions arising out of  representation provided in areas such as domestic relations, trust and estate matters personal injury cases and real estate matters.

Mrs. Brewer’s practice also includes representation of physicians and hospitals in health care matters.  This has included advising and counseling clients regarding:

Mrs. Brewer regularly defends liability actions involving claims of severe or catastrophic personal injuries such as paralysis and brain damage. 

PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC ASSOCIATIONS

Mrs. Brewer is active in the community where she served for over 15 years as a Board Member of Monongalia Health System, Inc.  She continues to serve on certain hospital committees as well as on the Board for the Mon General Hospital Capital Campaign.  She is a member of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.  She also participates in numerous public school and church activities.

Also active within the legal profession, Mrs. Brewer is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (Chair, 2003 - 2007) and a member of the West Virginia State Bar. She is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America (2003 to present) in the fields of legal malpractice, medical malpractice, and personal injury litigation and in the 2007 Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers for Business.  She is also a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Monongalia County Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, Inc., the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, Inc.  She served as a committee member on the Campaign for Legal Aid.  In 1996, Mrs. Brewer was appointed by Governor Underwood to serve on the  Judicial Advisory Committee.  Mrs. Brewer has served as a lecturer and an Adjunct Professor (Trial Advocacy) at West Virginia University College of Law and is an active mediator for the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia's Settlement Week program. She frequently lectures and gives educational presentations on professional liability issues and general health care matters.

EDUCATION

Mrs. Brewer received her legal education at George Mason University School of Law where she was a member of the Law Review staff and received honors in Trial Advocacy. She received her undergraduate education at Duke University.
