Recruiting committee members use on-campus interviews to inform students about the advantages and opportunities of working with Steptoe & Johnson, and to identify those students who would be a proper fit with the firm.
Hiring decisions for the firm’s summer program generally are based upon on-campus interviews, with follow-up office visits. Typically, second-year clerkship interviews are conducted in September and October, while first-year clerkship interviews occur in February and March.
Steptoe & Johnson encourages lateral candidates, as well as students whose schools the firm is not visiting on campus, to submit inquiries and resumes to the Director of Recruiting for consideration by the committee. If a need or interest exists, the committee will invite new associate or lateral candidates to an in-office interview. The office interview enables applicants to meet firm attorneys in the working environment and, for those unfamiliar with the locality, to tour the area. If not previously provided, writing samples and transcripts are routinely requested at this stage of the interview process. Hiring decisions are made as soon as possible following the office interview.
