About Judge McCarthy . . .
Judge McCarthy was a beloved and respected jurist and mediator who served his clients and constituents with excellence. Judge McCarthy was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean War. Following his military service, Judge McCarthy returned to Marietta College, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He went on to graduate from the West Virginia College of Law in 1958. Judge McCarthy then settled in Clarksburg where he began to serve the citizens of Harrison County as an assistant prosecuting attorney. He was elected to the Harrison County Commission, where he served 12 years. In addition, he served as the Clarksburg city attorney and on the Harrison County Airport Authority. In 1983, he was appointed to serve as circuit court judge in the 15th judicial circuit. He was later elected and re-elected to that position. After retiring from the bench in 1996, he continued to serve as a senior status judge and a civil mediator until his death in 2009.
