The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently regulates the work performed by contractors who renovate, repair and/or paint certain structures containing lead paint.

Current regulations:

  • Apply to contractors who disturb lead based paint on pre-1978 housing, child care facilities, and schools;
  • Mandate that contractors comply with accreditation requirements, training, certification and record keeping instructions;
  • Apply if more than 6 square feet of interior space of lead based paint is disturbed.

The EPA plans to modify its lead based paint regulations and intends to do so by December 31, 2016.  In addition, the EPA will conduct a public meeting by July 31, 2013 in order to accumulate information on lead hazards for purposes of crafting the new regulations.  It is expected that the requirements placed on contractors will intensify under the forthcoming regulations.
