Lexington, Ky. – Steptoe & Johnson PLLC attorney James H. Newberry Jr. has been appointed to the Legal Services Review Panel for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU). Newberry will work with other panel members from across the country to evaluate legal issues affecting independent colleges and universities, and to advise NAICU and its members on the implications of litigation pending in state and federal courts around the United States. Newberry’s term on the panel has already begun.
Newberry is the former mayor of Lexington, Ky. He joined Steptoe & Johnson last year after serving as vice president and general counsel for Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. He is the leader of Steptoe & Johnson’s Higher Education Team, and he serves as a member of the Education, Employment & Training Committee of the United States Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the Education & Workforce Development Council of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. Newberry earned his law and undergraduate degrees from the University of Kentucky.
NAICU serves as the unified national voice of private nonprofit higher education. Since 1976, the association has represented this subset of American colleges and universities on policy issues with the federal government, such as those affecting student aid, taxation, and government regulation.
