BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The law firm of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC and one of its attorneys, Stephen Gregory, have been awarded the Kaufman Pro Bono Award by the West Virginia State Bar. The Kaufman award recognizes law firms and individual attorneys who have donated the greatest number of pro bono hours throughout the previous year. This is the seventh consecutive year that Steptoe & Johnson has received the award.
Attorneys and paralegals throughout the firm’s six West Virginia offices donated nearly 3,000 hours of free legal counseling to help individuals and organizations. Legal Aid of West Virginia, CRISS-CROSS, Inc., Habitat for Humanity, Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, and the West Virginia Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) are some of the many organizations benefiting from the firm’s philanthropic efforts.
Additionally, attorney Stephen Gregory of the firm’s Charleston, W.Va. office received the Kaufman Award for his pro bono work. Gregory’s efforts on a complicated property-related matter made it possible for a family in need to obtain much-needed assistance.
“It is a privilege to be able to serve our communities and many worthwhile organizations by providing free legal services,” began Melissa Watkins, Pro Bono Coordinator. “We are honored to receive the Kaufman Award, and we look forward to more opportunities for serving those who need counsel the most. Also, we are very proud of Stephen Gregory’s efforts on behalf of a deserving family. He is an example for all attorneys to follow.”
