Steptoe & Johnson’s Employee Benefits Team offers customized legal services to clients on all facets of employee benefits and compensation law.

Group lawyers are experienced in both tax and non-tax aspects of compliance issues, client counseling, fiduciary issues, IRS, DOL, PBGC administrative proceedings, and litigation.  The group partners with other Steptoe & Johnson attorneys to assist clients with corporate transactions, litigation, reductions in force, and taxation of settlements.

Representative Experience

  • Experience with employee benefits issues in mergers and acquisitions, tax-qualified plans, welfare benefit plans, nonqualified deferred compensation, and ERISA Title I issues
  • Tax court litigation involving IRS’s disallowance of deductions to individual defined benefit plans
  • Summary judgment in numerous actions involving challenges to denial of benefits under ERISA plans
  • Defended purported class claims for wage and hour violations and individual claim of discriminatory discharge against a restaurant
  • Summary judgment involving multi-employer pension trust in litigation seeking additional pension benefits
