EPA Seeks Citizen Reports of Suspicious Oil and Gas Drilling Activities

On January 27, 2010, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the Eyes on Drilling tipline for citizens to report non-emergency suspicious activity related to oil and natural gas development.

Through the Eyes on Drilling tipline, citizens may report anonymously, or may identify themselves, when making reports on what appears to be illegal disposal of wastes and other suspicious activity related to oil and gas drilling activities. Both an 800 number and an email address have been designated for the tipline.

The EPA requests that citizens provide the location, time and date of any suspicious activities, a description of the vehicles, materials and equipment involved, and any perceived environmental impacts. EPA states that information collected is not only useful for identifying violations of EPA regulations, but it may also be useful in investigating industry practices.
