SENATOR BYRD TO SET HISTORIC MILESTONE – THEN CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY
According to the U.S. Senate Historian, on Wednesday, November 18, West Virginia's senior Senator, Robert C. Byrd, will become the longest-serving member of the United States Congress in the nation's history, with 56 years and 320 days of uninterrupted service.
Senator Byrd is already the longest-serving U.S. Senator, having achieved that record on June 12, 2006. On Wednesday, he will become the person with the longest service in both the House of Representatives and Senate combined, when he surpasses the current record held by former Senator Carl Hayden of Arizona.
On Friday, November 20, Senator Byrd will celebrate his 92nd birthday.
To commemorate U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd becoming the longest-serving Congressional member in history on November 18, 2009, Gov. Joe Manchin is joining members of the Legislature, congressional staff members and fellow West Virginians to pay tribute, celebrate and recognize the many accomplishments of the state's senior senator. The celebration starts at 3:00 p.m. with a speaking program in front of the senator's statue on the second floor Rotunda of the State Capitol.
We at Steptoe & Johnson salute Senator Byrd's remarkable accomplishments, and the enormous contributions he has made to the people of West Virginia and the United States.
Well-wishers can extend their congratulations to Senator Byrd by mailing him at the following address:
