Biography

Stephen Smith focuses his practice on environmental and energy-related matters including regulatory compliance counseling, litigation, and administrative agency law.  He represents clients before federal and state courts and administrative agencies.  He helps clients understand how the regulatory framework may impact their operations and businesses and how to develop and implement strategies that will minimize future enforcement.  He provides client counseling and advice on compliance, permitting and agency communications as well as business transactions.   He has served as Deputy General Counsel & Environmental Director for a company operating over thirty mining and manufacturing sites in the U.S. and Canada.  Mr. Smith began his environmental career as an agency enforcement attorney.
