Mattie F. Shuler
Associate
Mattie focuses her practice on professional liability and appellate matters. She assists clients at every stage of litigation, from initial intake to final resolution, including discovery, drafting pretrial motions, negotiations, mediation, and settlement. Before returning to Steptoe & Johnson, she served as an Assistant Solicitor General in the Office of the West Virginia Attorney General.
Mattie’s interest in appellate advocacy developed during law school, where she won the George C. Baker Cup Appellate Advocacy Competition and, as a second-year student, presented her first argument before the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. She later served as the first extern law clerk for Chief Justice Elizabeth D. Walker, strengthening her legal writing skills and gaining insight into the workings of West Virginia’s highest Court.
