Rare Earth Elements (REE’s) and other Critical Minerals are now a part of the popular energy transition lexicon in the United States. These elements have largely been mined and processed overseas, mainly in China. They are vitally important in many applications such as electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones and defense technologies. Given the pervasive need for REE’s and concerns over supply chain disruption, private and public efforts have been launched to develop a domestic supply. The new domestic focus on national security, infrastructure, energy independence and advanced technologies has engendered new and renewed interest in mining, development, processing, and commercial distribution of REE’s. We’ll explore the nature of REE’s and the challenges, both legal and economic, in identifying and developing domestic sources of REE’s and other Critical Minerals.
