BJ Sturgill Named to Associate Board of Directors for the Kentucky Coal Association

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Steptoe & Johnson PLLC’s BJ Sturgill has been named to the Associate Board of Directors for the Kentucky Coal Association (KCA). Sturgill will serve on the Board during the 2026 term.

Sturgill is a Member in the firm’s Lexington office and has more than 30 years of experience in the energy and natural resources industry. As former in-house counsel, including serving as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of a major U.S. metallurgical coal operator and developer, Sturgill brings unique perspectives and insights to the role. His experience will support KCA’s mission to position Kentucky’s coal industry more competitively in both domestic and global coal markets.

KCA is a 501(c)6 non-profit organization and was founded in 1947 with a mission to provide effective leadership for the coal industry. Among its founders was BJ’s uncle, Bill Sturgill, who was an eastern Kentucky coal operator who led his own company for more than 50 years. Bill was instrumental in shaping KCA’s legacy as a strong trade advocacy organization representing the coal industry in both Kentucky and Washington, D.C. Sturgill’s recent selection to the KCA Board of Directors reflects a multigenerational commitment to advancing and supporting Kentucky’s coal community.
