Cahill IP Joins Steptoe & Johnson in Louisville, Launching the Firm’s Entry into the Intellectual Property Space

Published: March 8, 2021

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Steptoe & Johnson PLLC announced today it has established a new intellectual property (IP) practice with the addition of two veteran IP attorneys. Amy Sullivan Cahill and Sallie Jacobs Stevens, formerly of Cahill IP, will practice from the firm’s Louisville office and spearhead the establishment of a practice area focused on copyrights, trademarks, and IP litigation.

“This is an exciting time for Steptoe & Johnson in Kentucky,” said CEO Christopher L. Slaughter. “Our Kentucky presence has been expanding, now closing in on 30 lawyers across three offices. The addition of Cahill IP, an intellectual property firm, and its market-leading specialists, Amy and Sallie, greatly enhance our team.” He continued, “Our clients’ IP interests are a growing concern and Steptoe & Johnson is dedicated to meeting our clients’ needs. Amy and Sallie will provide the right foundation of know-how and experience to accomplish that goal, and they bring a stable of leading corporate clients with them.”

“I’m grateful for the confidence Steptoe & Johnson’s leaders placed in me by asking me to join the firm and continue building my IP practice with the resources a large firm can provide,” said Cahill, who will lead the firm’s new Intellectual Property Team. “Steptoe & Johnson is a well-established firm, and they have a track record of promoting women to positions of leadership—Chris’s predecessor as CEO was Susan Brewer, an accomplished West Virginia litigator. The prominence of women at the firm and its national platform are the primary factors that helped me decide the move to Steptoe & Johnson is the right one.”

Cahill has nearly 30 years of experience in the areas of trademark licensing, trademark and copyright infringement litigation, software audit defense, and software license review. She has served as lead counsel in litigation involving infringement claims for visual art, celebrity likenesses, and software. She is a former adjunct professor for the George Mason University Law Center and developed the University of Kentucky College of Law’s first intellectual property drafting seminar course.

Cahill earned her law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law, her LL.M. in Intellectual Property from George Washington University Law School, and her bachelor’s degree from The University of the South.

Stevens has extensive experience in litigation and has been focusing her efforts in recent years on litigation related to intellectual property rights. Stevens also has experience in software license review and drafting. She earned her law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law and her bachelor’s degree from The University of the South.
