Mark E. Hanshaw Joins Steptoe & Johnson

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Steptoe & Johnson announced today that Mark E. Hanshaw has joined the firm’s Louisville office.  He will be part of the firm’s Business Department, focusing his practice in the area of higher education. Hanshaw has decades of experience in law as well as leadership at the highest levels of academia.

Hanshaw joins Steptoe & Johnson after serving as associate general secretary for the United Methodist Church Board of Higher Education and Ministry. He led the division’s primary programs including the Black College Fund and collegiate ministry. He served as the liaison between the Board and more than 100 Methodist colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and around the world. He also established and managed global partnerships in South Korea, Japan, Northern Ireland, and Africa.

He previously held several leadership positions with Texas Wesleyan University including dean of the School of Arts and Letters, faculty assembly chair, and chair of the Department of Religion, Ethics and Humanities. He was also assistant professor of law and ethics at Texas Wesleyan, and assistant professor of ethics and religion at Richland College. 

Prior to entering higher education, Hanshaw was involved in public policy through positions including vice president for public affairs firm Public Strategies, Inc., executive director for the Virginia House Caucus, and senior policy advisor for former U.S. Undersecretary of Commerce William Reinsch.  

Hanshaw earned his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, his doctorate from Southern Methodist University, his master’s degree from the University of Manchester, England, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee.
