New office to be led by former appeals court judge Gene Smallwood Jr.

WHITESBURG, Ky. – Steptoe & Johnson PLLC announced today the opening of its newest location in Whitesburg, Ky.  The office will be led by Gene Smallwood Jr., former judge of the Court of Appeals for Kentucky’s 7th Appellate District, Division Two.  The Whitesburg location is the firm’s third in Kentucky and its 14th nationwide.

“There is no one better suited to lead our latest expansion than Gene.  He is dedicated to Letcher County as a native son and legal counsel, and we are fortunate to have him on our team,” said Steptoe & Johnson CEO Susan S. Brewer.  “His knowledge of the courts and his trusted relationships with local businesses will be essential as the firm continues to grow in Kentucky.”

Smallwood has been practicing law for more than 40 years in law firms as well as in solo practice.  His career includes handling matters related to medical malpractice, mining law, personal injury law, workers’ compensation, and family law.  In 2016, Smallwood was appointed as assistant commonwealth attorney and began serving as a member of the Letcher County drug court.  There he helped drug offenders overcome addiction through individual and group therapy. Last year, Governor Matt Bevin appointed Smallwood to the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

Smallwood earned his law degree from the University of Kentucky School of Law and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

Steptoe & Johnson’s new office will be located at 127 Main Street, Suite C in Whitesburg.
