Steptoe & Johnson Welcomes Eleven New Associates to the Firm

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Steptoe & Johnson PLLC is pleased to welcome the newest class of associate attorneys to the firm. The new associates will practice in offices located in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia. They include Ashley Faulkner, Katie R. Herrmann, Kevin W. Hivick Jr., Michael T. Mawhinney, McKenna Meadows, Brice Phillips, Anna V. Pugh, Garrett M. Spiker, Eli Tilley, Rebecca N. Turnbull, and Kalynn G. Walls.

Faulkner practices in Steptoe & Johnson’s Morgantown, West Virginia office focusing on labor and employment matters. She was a summer associate for the firm in 2019 and 2020 and an extern clerk for U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh. She earned her law degree from West Virginia University College of Law where she was executive article selection and symposium editor of the West Virginia Law Review and a member of the 2020 Steptoe & Johnson Moot Court Team. She additionally was the president of the Women’s Leadership Council, the Student Bar Association secretary, and a student clinician for the United States Supreme Court Clinic. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Washington and Lee University.

Herrmann practices professional liability law in the firm’s Wheeling, West Virginia office. She was a summer associate for Steptoe & Johnson and held legal internships with Maxim Crane Works, Scarpone Law Offices, and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. She earned her law degree from Duquesne University School of Law and her bachelor’s degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Hivick practices transactional and regulatory law in the firm’s Charleston, West Virginia office with a focus on energy and natural resources. He is a past summer associate for Steptoe & Johnson and research fellow for the National Agricultural Law Center. He served as a judicial intern for Judge Louis “Duke” Bloom of the 13th Judicial Circuit of West Virginia. He earned his law degree from Washington and Lee University School Law. He holds a graduate certificate in public health from the University of Florida and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia.

Mawhinney practices business law in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office. He earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law where he was a research assistant and a managing editor for the Pittsburgh Tax Review. Mawhinney also completed internships for Disney Law Firm and for the University of Pittsburgh Office of Research. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University.    

Meadows practices business and energy litigation in the Bridgeport, West Virginia office. She worked as a summer associate for the firm in 2019 and 2020. She earned her law degree from West Virginia University College of Law where she was editor of the West Virginia Law Review. She also participated in the Supreme Court Clinic, Community Service Council, and Women’s Leadership Council. Meadows earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees from West Virginia University.

Phillips practices litigation in the firm’s office in The Woodlands, Texas. He earned his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law where he was associate editor and senior notes editor for the West Virginia Law Review, and secretary and treasurer for the WV Fund for Law in the Public Interest. He is also a past summer associate for Steptoe & Johnson. He earned his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University.

Pugh practices in the firm’s Bridgeport, West Virginia office.  She earned her law degree from West Virginia University College of Law where she was associate editor of the West Virginia Law Review. She is a graduate of The Academy of Law and Management of the Federal Penal Service of Russia in Ryazan, Russia. She is a past extern for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. She was also a summer associate for Steptoe & Johnson in 2019 and 2020. Her legal practice focuses on labor and employment.    

Spiker practices energy and business litigation in the firm’s Bridgeport, West Virginia office. Before joining Steptoe & Johnson, he was a clerk for Judge Robert Trumble of the Northern District of West Virginia and completed internships for U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia. He earned his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law where he was a member of the Steptoe & Johnson National Moot Court Team. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Shepherd University.

Tilley practices business and regulatory law in the firm’s Bridgeport, West Virginia office. He earned his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law and is a past summer associate for Steptoe & Johnson. As a law student, Tilley served as an extern for the West Virginia University Hospital General Counsel and served as a volunteer law clerk for Monongalia County Circuit Judge Phillip Gaujot. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Marshall University.

Turnbull practices business and energy litigation in the firm’s Columbus, Ohio office and was a summer associate for the firm in 2019 and 2020. Turnbull previously served as an extern for Judge Colleen O’Donnell of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. She also held internships with the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office and the West Virginia Legislature. She earned her law degree from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law where she was note editor for the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Marshall University.        

Walls practices business law in the firm’s Louisville, Kentucky office. She is a past summer associate for Steptoe & Johnson. Walls earned her law degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, where she was president of the Student Bar Association and a member of the National Moot Court Team. She previously served as a legal extern for the Special Victims Unit of the Jefferson County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Walls is an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Louisville, the Louisville Bar Association, and serves on the board of directors of the Louisville Forum. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville.
