MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Steptoe & Johnson PLLC attorney and former CEO Susan S. Brewer has been appointed to serve as interim Dean of the West Virginia University (WVU) College of Law, beginning July 1, 2025.
Brewer will serve a one-year term which aligns with the arrival of WVU’s incoming 27th President, Michael T. Benson, who takes office in July 2025. The new administration has selected a search committee who have started the process to hire a permanent Dean of the College of Law.
“I look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to help WVU as best I can,” said Brewer, who served as Steptoe & Johnson’s CEO from 2009 through mid-2020. “I am honored to be able to lead the College of Law during the University’s transition to a new Dean.” Brewer made history as the first female CEO of a major West Virginia-based law firm and executed strategic firm growth, opening six offices in Colorado, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
Brewer has spent the entirety of her legal career at Steptoe & Johnson and has litigated more than 100 jury and non-jury cases in state, federal and appellate courts. She received her law degree from George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School, and her A.B. from Duke University.
