The Steptoe & Johnson Energy Contracts Team is made up of attorneys and professionals with vast experience serving clients in the oil and gas, coal, renewables, and utility industries. Our team understands the diverse needs of our energy clients. In addition to providing skilled representation on a wide range of traditional contracts, we offer representation in continuously developing areas including carbon credit projects, carbon sequestration, and ESG considerations.
Our Energy Contracts team provides sound, prompt counsel for clients doing business in the major energy-producing regions of the United States, including Appalachia, Texas, Mid-Continent, and the Rockies. Our goal is to work collaboratively with our clients to effectively and efficiently meet their business goals.

- Negotiated and drafted documents, performed title curative services for, and closed multi-million-dollar energy transactions
- Represented sellers and buyers in various oil and gas acquisitions, including sale of an entity worth $3.75 billion and multiple transactions exceeding $100 million
- Represented an energy company in emissions offset credit agreement and other carbon capture-type projects
- Negotiated property agreements for commercial and utility-scale solar projects
- Led team drafting a multi-million-dollar supply agreement for the production and sale of biomass to an electric generating plant, which involved traditional contract issues, clean air and greenhouse gas regulations, tax credits and subsidies for renewable energy sources, corporate tax, and intellectual property issues
- Advised on joint operating agreements, drilling commitment agreements, farm-out agreements, and other documents defining parties’ rights and responsibilities in operating and producing in contract areas
